— Daily Clubs and Activities —
Mt. Hood Adult Day Center offers a variety of clubs and activities for participants to enjoy. Many clubs focus on cognitive stimulation and therapeutic benefits, while others focus on leisure and fun.
Active
Groove and Fit – Team members lead participants in a variety of exercises that work different muscle groups, balance, and strength.
Benefits: Physical fitness, socialization and fun!
Seated Stretching – Seated Stretching occurs daily before lunch. Participants are instructed to follow stretches and motions of the staff member/volunteer who is leading the activity.
Benefits: This is a physical activity that promotes healthy blood flow, muscle movement, motor skills, and breathing. Participants also need to follow a set of directions.
Creative
Art as Therapy – Participants use mediums such as pastels, charcoals, watercolors, and collage to create art.
Benefits: Art has been proven to relive stress and put people in a calmer state. Art also exercises motor skills and creativity.
Beading (Rotating Club) – Participants are encouraged to create unique pieces of jewelry using beads.
Benefits: Participants exercise creativity and expression, while working fine motor skills. Many participants enjoy giving the pieces they make to family and friends.
Card Making – Participants use stamps, ribbon, glitter, etc. to make beautiful and unique greeting cards. We pass them out on birthdays, special events, and when people just need a smile.
Benefits: Participants exercise creativity and expression, while working fine motor skills. Many participants enjoy giving the pieces they make to family and friends.
Creative Fiction Club – Participants use photos, images, or Rory’s Story Cubes to create a story. One participant will examine an image (or roll story dice) and create a part to the story. The next participant in line will pick up where the last person left off. A team member/volunteer will record the story on the whiteboard and read it when aloud when completed.
Benefits: Promotes creativity and cognitive functioning. Encourages team building and socialization. Participants also find this club quite humorous and laughter is usually inevitable.
Crafting – Crafting Club meets once per week and offers a different craft project each time.
Benefits: Crafting works motor skills with a focus on hand-eye coordination and sparks creativity, individuality and expression. Participants gain a feeling of accomplishment after creating something with their hands.
Pottery(Rotating Club) – Participants work with clay to create unique pieces of art.
Benefits: Working with the different textures and surfaces of the clay can be therapeutic for participants.
Games
Billiards/Poker/Cards/Table Games – Participants can play a game of pool in the Billiards Room or choose to play cards, dominoes, board games etc.
Benefits: These leisure games promote healthy competition and socialization, while encouraging participants to use strategy.
Bingo – Participants play for an assortment of prizes.
Benefits: BINGO is a social game. There is no skill involved. Participants enjoy playing for prizes and it’s a way to encourage fun and laughter.
Crosswords/Puzzles – Participants give the answers to clues in order complete a crossword puzzle. Jigsaw puzzles are also available throughout the center.
Benefits: Crosswords and puzzles engage the brain and promote healthy aging.
Dominoes – Dominoes Club promotes social interaction and friendly competition while exercising math skills and motor skills. Participants have to strategize thus stimulating cognition.
Penny Ante & Pictionary (Rotating Clubs) – Participants gather to play these social and cognitively stimulating group games. These games are a great way to break the ice and get to know each other a little better.
Hands On
Bread Making – Participants choose a recipe from bread book and work together to cook fresh bread.
Benefits: The smell of fresh bread baking engages the senses and may evoke memories. Participants are asked to follow a set of instructions. Bread is served for afternoon snack on these days and the smell around the center is wonderful!
Cooking Club – Cooking Club meets daily. Participants help prepare food items used for snacks, desserts, or to accompany lunch.
Benefits: Cooking Club encourages participants to follow a set of directions (recipe). Dicing, chopping, and assembling works motor skills. Allowing participants to be involved in the process of cooking gives many a sense of purpose and helps them feel like they are contributing to the program, just like they used to cook and contribute to their families.
Gardening Club – Participants explore horticulture and nature topics.
Benefits: Participants engage in horticultural projects, which engage the senses and evoke memories. Mt. Hood Adult Day Center offers an outdoor space with raised garden beds at different heights in order to meet the needs of our many participants. During the winter months, participants complete indoor activities such as fresh floral arrangements and bird feeders for the garden.
Social
Book Club – Participants enjoy diving into an exciting world of literature with adventure, mystery, and science fiction.
Mindfulness – This club focuses on spiritual well-being and is a place where participants can gain support from one another.
Happy Hour – Happy Hour is held on Friday afternoons. With permission from a family member/ medical professional, participants can choose to have a beer or a glass of wine while playing BINGO or to visit in the Billiards Room.
Memory Enrichment – A set of activities to stimulate cognitive functioning.
Benefits: The exercises and activities in this class promote healthy brain aging and have been proven to slow memory loss. Participants are encouraged to use reasoning and critical thinking, which benefit cognition.
Social Circle – Participants enjoy the conversations that take place during this club. Mt. Hood Adult Day Center promotes socialization and the formation of new friendships.
Tea Time/Mindfulness Therapy – Participants gather together to complete breathing exercises and sample different types of tea.
Benefits: Participants are encouraged to use their senses to describe what they see, taste, smell and feel while they sip the tea. This promotes mindfulness and can often evoke memories and feelings.
Tech
Karaoke – Participants enjoy singing a variety of karaoke songs after lunch.
Matinee – Matinee Club meets daily in the afternoon. Participants take turns choosing different movies to watch.
Benefits: Many of our participants are here for a full day and can become fatigued in the afternoon. This is a great time for people to kick their feet up and relax. Watching a movie with a group of people is also a social activity and can promote bonding.
Retro Radio – Participants meet in the Media Room and listen to old time radio programs such as Abbott & Costello and Groucho Marx.
Benefits: Retro Radio is a fun activity for many participants. It often times promotes reminiscing and evokes memories. Many of the programs are humorous, which encourages laughter. It is an entertaining and social club.
Wii – Participants meet in the Media Room to play games on the Wii gaming system.
Benefits: Using the Wii to play games promotes the use of muscles and cognition, while participants have fun and laugh together.
YouTube – Participants give suggestions of different videos they would like to watch, ranging from talent shows to funny cat videos and much, much more!
Benefits: This activity blends music and visual stimulation together. Participants enjoy requesting different songs/videos and sometimes they may even spark a memory or feeling. Other times, it’s just plain fun!
